NBA Live 14, Madden 25, FIFA 14, and UFC Coming to XBOX One

In what was surely one of the biggest gaming events of the year, Microsoft announced their new game console called the XBOX One.  During this announcement, EA Sports executive Andrew Wilson took the stage to show off a little bit about what to expect from sports video games on the new system.

A trailer, available below, displayed the first footage of FIFA 14, Madden 25, UFC, and NBA Live 14.  All of the sports games available on the XBOX One will be built on what is being called the “Ignite Engine.”

A release date for the XBOX one nor the games mentioned above was not released other than that we can expect the XBOX One to be available by the end of the year and that all 4 games will be available within the next 12 months.

More news on both the XBOX One and EA Sports’ next generation titles will be available in a few short weeks at E3.

THQ Closes Down San Diego Studio

Since THQ has sold their UFC license to EA, as we reported yesterday, they have decided to close down the studio that was responsible for making games in the UFC Undisputed series.  Every person in THQ’s San Diego studio has been notified of the decision and will either find work at EA Sports or have to find a new job.

THQ received a nice cash payment in exchange for their UFC license which the company badly needed so this decision has gotten mixed reactions.  THQ’s CEO Brian Farrell had this to say, “THQ confirms that today’s announcement regarding the UFC license transition will affect the company’s San Diego studio. THQ is working closely with those relevant staff to either find possible employment within the company, or potentially with EA.”

EA Secures UFC License

electronic arts gets ufc license

Electronic Arts (EA) held a press conference today where it was announced that they have secured the rights to the UFC, the biggest fighting league in the world.  Dana White had said many times in the past that he would never work with EA but it looks like he has since changed his mind.

THQ, the previous owner of the exclusive UFC video game license, has had a lot of financial trouble over the last few quarters leaving them with really no choice but to sell off the rights to the UFC to their competitor EA Sports.  THQ shares are up over 11% in trading today.

The original deal between THQ and the UFC gave the company rights until 2018 but with questions about whether THQ will even be around in 6 years and the downward trend in UFC Undisputed games’ sales caused both UFC and THQ to reconsider.

EA Sports developed their own MMA game last year without the UFC license but that is comparable to a video game company developing a football game without the NFL license.  Even though EA MMA was a decent enough game, there was no real road to growth if they followed that path.

The biggest sports video game publisher coupled with one of the fastest growing sports in the world could be a recipe for a huge hit.  Most of the details have not been released but when they are we will pass it along to you.

UFC Undisputed 3 is seriously struggling to gain traction among fans of mixed martial arts and casual video gamers.  However the downloadable content will continue to roll out.  If you payed $17 extra to get the “season pass” you get this update (as well as all other updates for free) but if you didn’t you can purchase this DLC which contains Joe Lauzon, Rory MacDonald, Sam Stout, Anthony Johnson, and Charles Oliveira for $5.

Five more fighters will be released in April which will cost you even more money for a game that is still having plenty of problems.  You can check out the YouTube video for the Fight of The Night DLC below.

UFC Undisputed 3 Online

Mixed martial arts fans have patiently waited for this day for about 2 years.  Gamers who like to compete online were shocked to find that some online modes in UFC Undisputed 3 are not working exactly as they should.  UFC Undisputed 2010 had terrible online lag which at times made the game unplayable.  Since then THQ has switched to their own servers in an attempt to correct the problem but it still persists.  There were reports of poor online quality from a few influencial bloggers and media outlets that received a copy of the game early but they were assured that everything would be good to go on release date.  Community manager THQ Tank had this to say:

Just to reaffirm, we are fully aware some users are unable to access certain online features. Player matches do work flawlessly however right now. We are addressing this issue ASAP and should have a resolution or further update shortly today.

The good news is that they are aware of the problem and are actively trying to fix it.  The bad news is that gamers really don’t care and expect a fully functionalproduct from day 1.  If THQ can fix this problem quickly, they will avoid a huge disaster and UFC Undisputed 3 should go on to become a great success.
